Why do I need a new liner?

New chimney linings are usually required as part of an installation for a new stove or to replace a failed liner often advised by a chimney sweep during their visit.

There are, however, a number of other reasons for installation of a chimney liner:

  • an unlined stove or open fire is causing smoke ingress to upstairs rooms
  • the chimney is deemed unsafe through creosote build up (un-certifiable by a chimney sweep)
  • to help insulate an exposed, poorly drawing chimney
  • a thatched property requires an insulated liner for home insurance and safety purposes
  • you are moving home and your existing installation is not compliant and requires lining

We are able to advise you on the liner options available depending on what fuel you are burning and the size of your appliance or open fire. This will also include cowl type and stove pipe choices.  All installations also need a register or closure plate to be compliant – ours are hand made to size using galvanised sheet steel with angle iron framework and are not the pre-purchased ‘one-size fits all’ type.

Quality Chimney Liner

We, at Summerfield Limited, prefer to supply and fit what we consider to be one of the best liners on the market – Tecnoflex Plus flexible flue liner made by Schiedel.  20% heavier than most, this liner also achieves better results in tests for temperature, corrosion and pressure compared with many other liners.  It has an extra smooth inner skin which allows for easy drain down of condensates, less opportunity for soot to build up in joint areas and ease of sweeping.  The robustness of the liner also ensures that it keeps its integrity even after the rigours of challenging installations.  It carries a 25 year guarantee and is available in two grades – 316 and 904 – the choice being dependent on the fuel burnt.

Fully Qualified and Registered

Summerfield Limited is a registered member of HETAS( Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme) which is the independent UK body recognised by DEFRA for undertaking the testing of fuels, appliances and any other associated equipment.  This means we can self certify all installations negating the need for correspondence with your local council.  New and replacement chimney linings are still subject to HETAS certification.  A HETAS Certificate of Compliance will be issued upon completion. This shows that the liner has been installed to Part J Building Regulations.  The information can be required to validate your home insurance and will be required for any home selling process.

Chimney Sweeping Services

HETAS recommend that your chimney should be swept at least once a year.  This may vary dependent on appliance usage.  Although we do not conduct chimney sweeping ourselves, we may be able to recommend chimney sweeping services if you live within Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and the surrounding areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a chimney need to be lined?
In a nutshell, yes, and there are a number of reasons why your chimney should be lined, not least because it will ensure toxic fumes from your stove are safely removed from your property. Other reasons include:

  • Older chimneys may not have a clay tile chimney liner
  • The current chimney liner is damaged
  • A chimney liner is required to ensure that your stove performs to its optimum performance and is safe to use

If you are not sure whether your current chimney needs to be relined or replaced, get in touch with a member of the team at Summerfield Fires Ltd. We will be more than happy to help you.

What is the best type of chimney liner?

When it comes to replacing or relining a chimney you should be sure to seek specialist advice from a HETAS approved installer.  Should your existing masonry chimney need to be rebuilt, you will require a builder and you may also have to seek planning permission.

Although, we do have access to a wide range of quality factory made chimney lining systems that can be used.  You can easily buy fire-resistant precast concrete, clay and pumice flue liners or ceramic liners that offer the best permanent solution.  However, this does depend on whether your existing chimney opening is the correct size for the new appliance and the flue you will need.

If our HETAS approved installer finds that the access to the existing chimney is difficult or impossible then the alternative double skin flexible stainless steel flue liners can be of use.  Although these chimney liners offer easier installation, they are not permanent.

How much does it cost to line a chimney?

The cost to line a chimney will vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of chimney lining required, is it a repair or replacement etc.  Summerfield Fires will be able to provide you with an accurate quote for lining your chimney, so don’t hesitate to get in touch today.

How often should I get my chimney swept?
HETAS recommend at least once a year for wood burning stoves. It may be advisable to sweep your chimney more frequently if you are burning solid mineral fuel or not burning your wood cleanly. A reliable, certified chimney sweep should be able to advise you on sweeping frequency.
How long do chimney liners last?
Again this depends on the type of liner that you have. Clay tile liners typically last for around 50 years, whereas a stainless steel flexible flue liner lasts between 10-25 years depending on the manufacturer’s guarantee.
